Promoting British Values at Spon Gate Primary School

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British Values at Spon Gate Primary School to ensure young people leave our school prepared for life in modern Britain. Children are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

Democracy

At the beginning of each school year, children work alongside their class teachers to create a class charter. Our school council is made up of 2 children from years 1-6 and these are voted for by the children in their class. The school council meet frequently with the PSHE lead and a learning mentor to support school improvement. School council members are encouraged to work alongside their peers to gather pupil views and work within the school community to promote our core values and lead by example.

The rule of law

Our behaviour policy at Spon Gate Primary School promotes positive reinforcement of behaviour. However, children are taught that there are consequences to behaviour which does not follow our golden rules. All staff are trained in ‘Emotion Coaching’ to help children think about their behaviour and the consequence they may need to receive. They work with the child affected by the behaviour to ensure a sense of justice received. Children also have regulary visits from the police, fire service and magistrates to reinforce the rule of law.

Individual Liberty

At Spon Gate Primary School, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for children to make choices safety, through of provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Our protective behaviour aspect of our PSHE curriculum gives children the tools they need to make choices they feel confident about.

Mutual Respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

Mutual respect is at the heart of Spon Gate Primary School. We ensure inclusion of all is central to our curriculum and school community by supporting children to understand differences and celebrate them. Our curriculum ensures all children are supported to be the best they can be. PSHE and RE is planned and delivered to all and promotes an understanding of all faiths and beliefs. We celebrate how different and special we all are as individuals and encourage learning opportunities which arise from differences we may not have come across before, for example saying good morning in a language used by a child who is new to our school.
